Outdoor Mosaics: Garden Pot

PREREQUISITE: Before registering for this class, I prefer that you first take my "Introduction to Mosaics Class" or that you have taken an equivalent class elsewhere. The foundation provided in the Intro class will make the "Garden Pot" class easier and will shorten your learning curve. If you have any questions about this, please text me at 406-671-9605.

OVERVIEW. In this class, you will learn the basics of making outdoor mosaics: adhesives, substrates, waterproofing, tiles, grout and so on. Especially in harsh climates (like Montana winters), use of the proper materials is critical.

PROJECT DETAILS. You will mosaic a 7.5" diameter x 7" tall terracotta garden pot that has been waterproofed prior to class. You will 1) decorate the pot by gluing on tiles in a pattern of your choice, using mostly hand-cut china pieces, and 2) grout your finished design.

To make your design your own, you will choose your colors and tile arrangement, keeping in mind the time limit for the class (nothing super elaborate). Available materials will include a wide variety of solid and patterned china, focal tiles, mirror pieces, glass tiles, and more. To help you think about design options, I will send you some design guidelines and ideas when you register.

CLASS SESSIONS: Each class will consist of two 3-1/4 -hour sessions, one week apart. You will lay out and glue down your mosaic piece during the first session. You will grout your piece in the second session. If for some reason you have a conflict for the second class (grouting), I might be able to arrange a different time for you to grout (please text me before registering).

WHAT IS PROVIDED: 1) Written design guidelines and ideas (emailed to you upon registration) to get you thinking about design possibilities, 2) the pot, adhesives, mosaic materials, nippers, apron, paper towels, grout, face masks, protective eyewear, etc.), and 3) instructor help and guidance throughout class. If you are unable to use nippers due to strength issues, I will have lots of pre-cut tiles available and will help you with cutting if needed.

WHAT TO BRING: 1) Covered water bottle (if desired), and 2) clothes you don't mind getting stained with glue or grout.
